Why does Switzerland renounce greater integration with the European Union? Three reasons:
- They want complete freedom to act as they see fit for their economy on state aid
- They oppose welfare for EU citizens who move to Switzerland
- Protection of their wages.
So they choose to trade freely with the EU according to many bilateral trade agreements, as the EU has with many other countries, but without the commitments on how to manage its economy. This is not autarchy, as I have heard, but a pragmatic approach, I believe, which keeps EU interference in internal affairs at bay, without giving up trade. In practice what all the other 160 countries of the world do: they trade more or less freely at more or less low tariffs, but they maintain the management of their industrial and social policies, I repeat: wages, state aid, welfare.
