Turfan is a city-prefecture of the People’s Republic of China, in the Xinjiang region. It has a population of 254,900 inhabitants (2003).
In ancient times one of the Tocaria languages was spoken here, an extinct group belonging to the Indo-European linguistic family. It is located 150 km southeast of Ürümqi.
